Washington Square Park



Washington Square Park is one of the most famous parks in New York City. The park is located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. This great area is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The birth of Washington Square Park initiated in 1826 when the city of New York bought the land located in the west of the Minetta. The square was leveled, laid out and turned into the Washington Military Parade Ground. During the 1830s the streets that surrounded the square were known to be one of the city's most desirable residential areas. The military parade ground from 1949 to 1950 was reworked with more paths and a new fence that surrounded the area and became the first park on the city. The Washington Square Park was re design in 1871.

The Washington Square Park contains a variety of trees and flowers, which part of it is used for plantings because of its paving. This area has two prominent features which are the following: The Arch and the large fountain. Besides its prominent features it includes playgrounds for kids, gardens, a scrabble and chess area, picnic tables, benches, two dog runs and commemorative statuary. The commemorative monuments and statues available in the are: Giuseppe Garibaldi, George Washington and Alexander Lyman Holley. Washington Square Park has several security cameras which are operated by the New York Police Department (NYPD). There are also security officers from the City Parks Department that often patrol the area.

The Washington Square Park was extensively featured in the film called I Am Legend. A very famous series by the name of Curb Your Enthusiasm starring Larry David has also one of its episodes at this famous area. The episode takes place at nighttime where it shows Larry hanging out at the park and at some moment he makes the decision to buy something from a guy who was at a bench of the park. There are many other events and films that have taken place at this prestigious park. This famous area has been a hub for culture and politics for the city of New York. Barack Obama who was a Democratic presidential candidate at that time, had held a rally with 20,000 individuals registered for the event. This event occurred on September 27th of 2007. This rally was categorized as one of the largest campaign events of the year.
